Two brothers marry same woman in India under unique polyandry tradition
(Web Desk) - In India, two brothers have married the same woman, and the images and videos of this event have become a sensation on social media.
According to Indian media reports, this unique wedding ceremony took place in the village of Shilai in Himachal Pradesh, involving two brothers from the Hati tribe.
The marriage was conducted under the tradition of polyandry, where a woman has multiple husbands.
The report states that the bride, Sunita Chauhan, married Pradeep and Kapil Negi. All three stated that they made this decision without any pressure.
According to Indian media, this tradition is referred to as *Jodidara* under the revenue laws of Himachal Pradesh. In the village of Budhana in the Trans-Giri district, five such marriages have taken place in the last six years.
The groom, Pradeep, hails from Shilai village and is a government employee, while his younger brother, Kapil, resides abroad for employment purposes.
The tradition of a woman having multiple husbands has been practiced for centuries in the Hati tribe. However, with increased education and economic improvement among women in the region’s tribes, this practice had nearly died out.
Village elders revealed that such marriages are conducted discreetly and are socially accepted, though their frequency is low.
According to Indian media, experts suggest that one reason for this custom is to prevent the division of ancestral lands, as the issue of tribal women’s share in ancestral property remains a fundamental point of contention.
