Student recreates university campus on Minecraft
TEXAS (Web Desk) – A computer science student at South Dakota State University, Brookings meticulously recreated a large portion of his university’s campus in the popular video game Minecraft.
Jaxxen Cheney at School of Mines and Technology started building the campus in his leisure time in a bid to get familiar before enrolling the university. “I want this to help other people on the campus, like incoming students, especially ones that live really far away who can’t just visit on a whim,” Cheney was recorded saying at university’s public radio.
Minecraft is an open-world “sandbox” game where users can build nearly anything through the use of blocks.
Posting on Reddit the news of rendering campus in the game after investing 700 hours in the project has got alumni and others homesick for the university on the spree of appreciation and gratitude for Jaxxen. “One of the original inspirations was also the class of 2020. I had a lot of friends in that, and they didn’t get to ever go back to school”, said Cheney.
He hosted the virtual campus’ video on a server that cost $7 a month to maintain and later opened his Minecraft sever to others who helped in the reconstruction. Cheney used Google Earth to plan sapcing of buildings and exterior and maps of the university to build the interiors.
The School has made a video and a photo gallery of the virtual campus.
