Thousands dance with swords for world record attempt in India
Prince of Rajkot said: "the sword dancing embodies our unity, valour, bravery, art, and skill".
RAJKOT (Reuters) - A group of 2,126 people came together to display the culture, art, and valour of the Hindu warrior group of Rajput and set a new Guinness World Record on Tuesday (January 28).
Women dressed in colourful traditional dresses, moved gracefully in co-ordinated movements performing ‘talwar raas’ (sword dance), under the flagship of the former royal family of Rajkot in India’s western Gujarat state.
Prince of Rajkot, Mandhata Sinh Jadeja said "the sword dancing embodies our unity, valour, bravery, art, and skill combined into one." The record was for most number of people (men or women) performing group dance with swords, while dancing for at least five minutes.
The art of sword dance dates back to Mughal-era when Rajput women welcomed their men after they returned victorious from a battle.
