Edinburgh gives degrees to first female medical students after 150 years

(Dunya News) – University of Edinburgh has finally awarded medical degrees to its first female medical students after a time span of 150 years.

The group, collectively known as the Edinburgh Seven, enrolled to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1869. However, they were prevented from graduating and qualifying as doctors after facing prejudice.

The seven women – Mary Anderson, Emily Bovell, Matilda Chaplin, Helen Evans, Sophia Jex-Blake, Edith Pechey and Isabel Thorne – were awarded medicine degrees in a ceremony at the university’s McEwan Hall.

The degrees were received by seven female students of the university on their behalf.
