BEIJING (Web Desk) - China’s ‘Sugar King’ is garnering praise for his exquisite and incredible human figurine cakes that have won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the International Cake Competition held last year.

Zhou Yi is known as one of China’s most talented cake decorators and is now globally recognized as one of the world’s top patissiers.

His cakes feature Chinese culture and traditional art, including a mind-blowing figurine of Wu Zetian, China’s first and only female emperor. It won a top prize at the world’s largest cake competition in the English city of Birmingham.

His cakes pass through a lengthy process of trial and error with remaking many parts several times.

“Some parts were remade eight times just because the result was not quite what I wanted,” Zhou told China Daily. “You need to build every single component over and over again until you find the perfect fit.”

Another cake ‘Lie Drunk in Nepenthic Land’ also featuring Wu got a Bronze medal because it was made using a paste too thick to cut, meaning it broke the rules.

A cake master on Zhou’s team, Chaojing Du, made the iconic Chinese literary character the Monkey King in cake form and took home a Gold award.

All of the wonderful cakes are edible and hand-made.
