(Web Desk) - People hurled oranges at each other in the northern Italian city on Sunday, as part of the annual Carnival of Ivrea.

The juicy battle in Ivrea is part of the town’s yearly carnival, which recreates a centuries-old revolt by commoners against the monarchy.

One theory suggests that it is reenactment of the civil war between Napoleons’ troops and the people of Ivrea, with those on foot representing the townspeople and those in carts and the troops.

Moreover, crates of oranges are tightly stacked one over the other stand on the sidewalks, and some spectators take refuge to avoid being hit by wayward pulp.
