ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned mobile phone users against handing over their SIM cards to other people, saying they could be held responsible if the SIM registered in their name is used for illegal activities.
In a message issued on Friday, the telecom regulator said providing a SIM card to another person was a punishable offence and warned users that criminal or unlawful activities could be carried out through SIMs registered against their identity.
The PTA advised citizens to check the number of SIMs registered against their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) through cnic.sims.pk or by sending their CNIC number without dashes to 668.
Users were also advised to immediately block any unknown or unnecessary SIM registered in their name.
The authority urged consumers to obtain new SIM cards only from authorised franchises or customer service centres and to ensure that no SIM had been registered against their identity without their consent.
The PTA had earlier warned citizens against undergoing biometric verification in exchange for free SIM cards, cautioning that fraudsters could use such verification to issue additional SIMs in their names.
