Summary “Aerial and digital surveillance is an essential requirement and the future of modern policing,” Odho said during the meeting, according to a statement.

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Police in Sindh have decided to establish a dedicated aerial surveillance unit using drones and modern technology to enhance monitoring and crime prevention across the region, officials said on Saturday.

The proposed “Aerial Surveillance Division” will enable continuous monitoring of urban centers, highways, railway tracks and riverine areas, which are often difficult to police through conventional means.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police, Javed Alam Odho, at the Central Police Office in Karachi, where senior officers reviewed existing capabilities and future requirements.

“Aerial and digital surveillance is an essential requirement and the future of modern policing,” Odho said during the meeting, according to a statement.

It added that a committee of senior officers would be formed to finalize the division’s structure, standard operating procedures and operational framework, while also assessing procurement and training needs.

Sindh police’s IT wing briefed the meeting on the use of drones and other modern equipment, outlining their potential role in improving surveillance, response times and coordination.

“Through modern technology and aerial surveillance systems, policing and surveillance will not only become easier but more effective and reliable,” Odho said.

The new system would play a key role in tackling crime, particularly in remote riverine regions known for criminal activity, as well as in densely populated urban areas.

“Continuous aerial monitoring of urban areas, key highways, railway tracks, highways and riverine areas will play a key role in timely crime prevention, identification of suspicious activities, and ensuring swift action,” the IG added.

The statement said aerial and digital surveillance would also strengthen traffic management, crowd control and monitoring of public gatherings.

“Effective use of digital and aerial surveillance will further improve traffic management, crowd control, monitoring of public gatherings, and protection of life and property,” Odho said.

The committee has been tasked with submitting detailed recommendations on technical requirements and training programs, with senior officers from across the province asked to contribute based on operational needs.
