PITB entrusted with restoring access to free Wi-Fi in public spaces
LAHORE (Dunya News) - The initiative to provide free Wi-Fi services in public spaces seems to have been restored across Punjab following the announcement by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been entrusted with the implementation of the free Wi-Fi project, with sources stating that the old infrastructure, including hotspots, would be restored.
The project aims to offer free Wi-Fi access at public spaces such as educational institutions, hospitals, bus stops, and railway stations. Additionally, efforts will be made to identify and designate new hotspot areas to enhance Wi-Fi accessibility for the public.
The PML-N previously introduced free Wi-Fi services in Lahore and other cities during its government in 2013. However, the provision of this service was halted by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during its government.
When the project was launched, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) was entrusted with the task to provide and maintain facility for the people. The responsibility for the free Wi-Fi service in public spaces has now been assigned to the provincial technology board, PITB.
The restoration of the service is expected to benefit the public by providing internet access in key locations, fostering connectivity and facilitating communication.
