The written order states that PTA could not provide any justification for ban on TikTok

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday sought a report over the government s policy regarding ban on the TikTok, a video sharing social networking service.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah has issued a written order while hearing a citizen s petition against ban on the social media platform. The four page written order states that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) could not provide any justification for the ban on TikTok. While, the deputy attorney general has sought more time to file a response from the court.

According to the written order, the PTA s counsel had told the court that the issue of TikTok ban had not been taken up with the cabinet. Replying to the court’s question, the PTA officials also said that TikTok application can be used through other sources of technology. The ban on video-app is also ineffective because it can be accessed through other means of technology.

In a written order, the court said that while it is a recognized fact that one per cent of people only misusing this app, so the ban on social media applications is not the solution. “The sign of degradation in society cannot be matched with the content on social media sites. The globally extraordinary advancement of technology has posed many challenges to the society,” the court said in the order.

The IHC, while seeking a report, questioned the government s policy on banning TikTok. The court also directed the PTA to seek a policy from the premier and the federal cabinet on banning TikTok and submit a report on the policy of the federal government on September 20.
