PTA blocked social media App TikTok for failing to filter out immoral content

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Lahore High Court (LHC) was approached on Monday seeking directives for the authorities concerned to block the use of TikTok through Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and proxies, Lahore News reported.

The petitioner states in his petition that the popular short video-sharing Chinese app is still being used by people through VPN and proxies after it was banned by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

On October 9, PTA decided to block social media App TikTok for failing to filter out immoral content, the country’s telecommunication authority said on Friday.

A senior official of the government involved in the decision told Reuters, “We have been asking them repeatedly to put in place an effective mechanism for blocking immoral and indecent content”.

“The platform, however, hasn’t been able to fully satisfy Pakistani authorities. The decision has been taken to block TikTok for accessing in Pakistan,” he said.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a formal press release notifying the decision, saying that In view of number of complaints from different segments of the society against immoral/indecent content on the video sharing application TikTok, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued instructions for blocking of the application.

It further said that despite issuing a final notice to the application and giving considerable time to respond and comply with the Authority’s instructions for development of effective mechanism for proactive moderation of unlawful online content, the application failed to fully comply with the instructions, therefore, directions were issued for blocking of TikTok application in the country.
