LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday (May 8) the United States and Britain would continue to have a strong relationship regardless of the outcome of Brexit.

"The special relationship does not simply endure, it is thriving," Pompeo told a joint news conference on Wednesday with British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt.

When asked about Huawei s role in Britain s new 5G network, Pompeo said the U.S. wants Britain to ensure 5G networks are secure and has an obligation to demand that its intelligence is held safely.

He also said the United States expects every country will work to take back their citizens who fought for Islamic State in Syria.

Earlier this year Britain removed the citizenship of a teenager who travelled to join Islamic State.

The case illustrated the difficulties Western capitals are facing as they try to work out what to do with battle-hardened foreign jihadist fighters, and their wives and children.

Pompeo also said he was disgusted to see politicians in Britain and in the United States continue to support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
