(Web Desk) - As the month of Ramazan is about to start, people who have illnesses related to the heart are probably apprehensive about fasting. It is generally not considered a good idea for heart patients to fast and remain without food and water for more than twelve hours, that too in this sweltering heat when temperatures cross 40 degrees.

For heart patients, it is better to seek the opinion of health experts with regards to their intentions about fasting.

Medical experts are generally of the opinion that heart patients can fast in Ramazan but have to undertake the necessary precautions to protect their health.

Medical experts say that people who have had a heart attack in the past, or had undergone angioplasty or a bypass surgery more than a year ago, if such people are capable of carrying on with their daily routine generally, what they can do in Ramazan is reduce their daily work and fast.

Doctors also say that those patients who experience breathing problems should not fast on medical grounds.

Moreover, health experts are also of the view that heart patients should consult their doctor if they want to fast. If they want to fast they can take their medicines at sehar and iftar and avoid labourious work during the day.

Experts also say that heart patients should avoid eating a lot when breaking their fast.

Furthermore, eating small meals periodically between iftar and sehar is vital for heart patients to maintain their energy levels.
