Summary

Amir Khan successfully stepped up a weight division to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) light-welterweight title from Andreas Kotelnik with a unanimous points win.The British boxer won his first world title by earning a 120-108, 118-111 and 118-111 verdict at the MEN Arena in Manchester over Ukrainian Kotelnik, who was making his third defence of the belt he won last year.Khan backed up his claim that he will be better at light-welterweight, despite previously predominantly campaigning at lightweight since winning a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.Victory also proved Khan was correct in insisting the world title fight had not come too soon for him after being knocked out in just 54 seconds by Colombian Breidis Prescott at the same venue in September. As Khan lifted the world title belt at the end of the contest, it seemed hard to believe that he had been left flat on his back within a minute inside the same ring less than a year ago.But Khan dominated Kotelnik, especially in the latter rounds as the champion?s earlier threat faded against the younger, faster challenger. While talking to Dunya News Amir said that he just wants to thank God for the win and that his parents backed him up all-throughout the tournament which really helped him.
