HONG KONG (Reuters) - With just six months until the start of their qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup, two defeats in five days under Fabio Cannavaro have only served to deepen the long-standing pessimism surrounding China’s national team.
Back-to-back 1-0 reversals in Nanning against Asian opposition — Thailand last Thursday and Uzbekistan on Monday — underlined the difficulties China face in their quest to end their long absence from the World Cup.
The next World Cup in Qatar will mark the 20th anniversary of the country’s only appearance at the finals and, with Asian qualifying kicking off in September, the Chinese are suffering from a lack of confidence and clarity.
A dispirited squad, desperately in need of rebuilding, has yet to find out if Cannavaro — appointed for the China Cup but also serving as head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande — will remain at the helm for the long-term.
“I’m not in a rush to decide,” the Italian World Cup winner said after the loss to Uzbekistan.
