An inspired Mario Balotelli consigned Joachim Loew s side to a semi-final exit in Warsaw. The mercurial Italy striker netted twice in the first half with Mesut Ozil s stoppage-time penalty not enough for Germany.
2016 European Championship
Germany 1 Italy 1 - Germany win 6-5 on penalties
For the first time a meeting between the two was sent to a penalty shootout as Leonardo Bonucci converted from the spot to cancel out Ozil s opener in normal time.
However, Bonucci was among four Italian sinners in the shootout as the Juventus defender, Simone Zaza, Graziano Pelle and Matteo Darmian missed to spare the blushes of Germany s Ozil, Thomas Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger before Jonas Hector drilled home the winning spot-kick.
