KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Australian Nick Kyrgios advanced to the second round of the Malaysian Open on Monday after scoring an easy victory over Colombian Santiago Giraldo in Kuala Lumpur.

Following a four-week suspension from ATP events, seventh seed Kyrgios looked dominate as he won the first set 6-1. Giraldo later pulled out in the second, as he trailed 1-2, due to illness.

"My goal is to win this tournament. I hadn t played in many tournaments the past few weeks, but I have been doing a lot of hard work these past few weeks and it showed off today," said Kyrgios.

"I am disappointed I could not play until the end, but I played really well. I wish him (Giraldo) all the best and hope he recovers soon," he added.

During last year s Malaysian Open, Kyrgios was knocked out during the first round of the tournament.

Monday marked Kyrgios s return to ATP action after being fined and suspended 28 days from all ATP-sanctioned competition. The punishment was handed down to the 20-year-old after he made infamous comments to rival Stan Wawrinka about his girlfriend being unfaithful during a match last month in Montreal.

In the day s other first-round action, Germany s Benjamin Becker defeated Sam Groth of Australia 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) to move into the second round.

"It s obviously nice to win indoors and play in a venue where I had some success," said Becker, who made it the quarterfinals of the tournament in Kuala Lumpur last year.
