Summary Cowboys plan to start Brandon Weeden in Romo's absence with Cassel serving as backup

DALLAS (AFP) - The Dallas Cowboys addressed some of their injury concerns on Tuesday by acquiring quarterback Matt Cassel in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

The Cowboys acquired Cassel because quarterback Tony Romo was placed on the injured list with a broken left collarbone and could miss half the season.

The Cowboys plan to start Brandon Weeden in Romo s absence with Cassel serving as backup.

The Bills sent a 2017 seventh-round draft pick and Cassel to the Cowboys for a 2017 fifth-round pick.

Cassel only joined the Bills during the offseason but was beaten out for the starting job by Tyrod Taylor.

Romo injured his shoulder Sunday and decided to pass on surgery and let it heal naturally. The typical recovery time is eight weeks.

He is eligible to be activated on November 22.
