Summary
Germany beat Uruguay 3-2 to secure third place in the World Cup in one of the games of the tournament Saturday in Port Elizabeth. Khedira headed in after a goalmouth scramble following a corner with eight minutes to go of the third place playoff between the tournament's losing semi-finalists. Thomas Mueller had given Germany the lead in the 19th minute with his fifth goal of the tournament but Edinson Cavani equalized nine minutes later. Uruguay took the lead early in the second half with a brilliant strike by Diego Forlan, also his fifth of the World Cup, but Marcell Jansen put Germany back level within five minutes. Mueller and Forlan joined Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder and Spanish striker David Villa at the top of the scorers' table. It was the second tournament running that Germany had finished third. Into their third World Cup final (having lost in 1974 and 1978 to hosts West Germany and Argentina), Van Bronckhorst is determined the Dutch will finally bring home the trophy.
