Summary
South Africa rejoiced Sunday as Ghana became only the third African team ever to make the World Cup quarter-finals, as England crashed out of the tournament after a defeat by Germany.Even South Africa's organisers shed their neutrality to welcome the victory of the Black Stars as the only nation still carrying a flag from the continent in the first tournament held on its soil. Germany pulled the biggest upset of the tournament in front of a packed Bloemfontein stadium Sunday when they beat the star-studded England side by four goals to one. The long rivalry between English and German supporters has in the past triggered some brutal episodes of hooligan violence. Later Sunday former champions Argentina saw off Mexico 3-1, setting up a last eight showdown with Germany in Cape Town on July 3.Argentina needed a couple of breaks in its second round World Cup match. It got one from the referee and another from Mexico. Carlos Tevez scored twice, once on a disputed goal and Gonzalo Higuain added another as the Albiceleste beat Mexico 3-1 on Sunday to move into the quarterfinals. With Mexico getting the best scoring chances early on, Tevez headed in a pass from Lionel Messi in the 26th minute from close in. Referee Roberto Rosetti of Italy awarded the goal after consulting with his linesman, the pair surrounded by angrily gesturing Mexican and Argentine players. Then in the 33rd minute, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Mexico's Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd Tevez blasted in one of the tournament's best goal, an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. The Mexicans couldn't, and Argentina has won all four of its matches in the tournament.
