Summary
Portugal joined Brazil in the last 16 of the World Cup on Friday after the pair drew 0-0 in their final Group G game. Brazil topped the group with seven points and Portugal ended on five with the Ivorians on four. Brazil will now play the runners-up from Group H as Chile, Spain and Switzerland battle for the two last-16 places. Earlier, Brazil dominated possession and wasted two excellent chances through Nilmar and Luis Fabiano in a half that saw seven yellow cards for some nasty challenges and associated backchat to Mexican referee Benito Archundia. Dani Alves had the first attempt of the game, striking a 25-yard shot just wide after a good through ball from Julio Baptista, starting in place of key Brazilian playmaker Kaka. The best chance of the half came in the 30th minute, Nilmar getting in at the back post to direct a Fabiano cross at Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo, who did well to turn the ball onto the post and safety.
