Nasr Al Niyadi and Omar Al Hegelan, from the Emirates Aviation Society, were given permission to jump, broke the base-jump record on Tuesday (January 5) a day after the official opening of the building, taking just one and a half minutes to reach the ground at speeds of 136 mph (220 km/hr). Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, renamed the tower Burj Khalifa in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, ruler of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which has bailed Dubai out to the tune of 25 billion U.S. dollars in the past year.
