LONDON (AP) - Steaua Bucharest followed up its elimination of Ajax in the Europa League by producing another surprise result on Thursday, beating European champions Chelsea 1-0 in their last-16 first leg in Bucharest.
Chelsea, which dropped into the competition after an unprecedented early exit from the Champions League group stage, was way below its best and sunk by a 34th-minute penalty by Raul Rusescu.
Lazio and Fenerbahce will also take leads into next week s second legs after beating Stuttgart and Plzen, respectively, away.
Goals by Ederson and Ogenyi Onazi gave Lazio a healthy 2-0 cushion while Stuttgart won 1-0 after Pierre Webo s 81st-minute strike.
Big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala drew 0-0 with Newcastle in the other completed early match.
