US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro arrived in Argentina to a hero's welcome after beating Roger Federer in five sets to pick up his first Grand Slam title. He gave autographs to hundreds of fans who came to Buenos Iris airport to receive their hero. Del Potro, who turns 21 next Wednesday, ended Federer's five-year unbeaten reign at Flushing Meadows after fighting back twice from a set down to win 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. He followed Guillermo Vilas and Gabriela Sabatini as Argentine US Open champions and is the first man other than Nadal to beat the Swiss star in the final of a Grand Slam tournament. Del Potro has rocketed up the rankings over the last year and after winning the grand slam has moved to the fourth position from sixth.
