Australian Bernard Tomic set a second-round meeting with defending champion Novak Djokovic after eliminating Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a two-hour contest.The 19-year-old Tomic, who lost to Djokovic in the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finals, is making his debut at the Foro Italico.Italian wild card Fabio Fognini took 75 minutes to defeat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-2, 6-2 in blistering conditions to advance to the second round.The 24-year-old from San Remo recently reached his first ATP World Tour final in Bucharest (l. to Simon).Nicolas Almagro reached round two after a 6-2 3-6 6-0 victory against Croatian Marin Cilic of Croatia.The 12th seed from Spain collected his circuit-best 19th match win on clay this season, finishing strong to defeat recent Munich finalist Cilic.The Croatian had won their previous two meetings, including a clay-court encounter two years ago in the Munich quarter-finals.World number 10 John Isner of the United States overcame Philipp Kohlschreiber 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 in the late night match.The 27-year-old American will now face Italian number one Andreas Seppi, who recently won the clay-court title in Belgrade.
