Summary

Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) has withdrawn its early given stay order against the proposed hike in electricity rates by NEPRA. While hearing his suo moto notice on increase in electricity tariff in Islamabad Thursday, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry withdrew his order on assurance of National Electric Power Regulatory Authority that it would not raise power tariff. The counsel for PEPCO and NEPRA complained in the court about the difficulties being faced by the power companies due to the stay order. CJP in reply said that the court did not want to intervene in governments matters. However, any increase should not be a burden on the consumer.Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the case for three weeks and ordered the government to present all record related to the case before the court in next hearing.
