Summary Pakistan Bar Council rejected statements by eight members, saying they represented individual views and reaffirming its commitment to constitutional and democratic principles.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Pakistan Bar Council has distanced itself from what it described as PTI propaganda and statements issued by several of its members, clarifying that such remarks do not represent the council's collective position.
The council's vice chairman said a statement issued by only eight of its 23 members reflected their individual views and could not be presented as the collective stance of the Pakistan Bar Council.
He said that in an institution governed by democratic principles, a minority could not impose its position on the majority. He stressed that the Pakistan Bar Council was a representative body of the legal fraternity and should remain above political interests and personal agendas.
The council strongly condemned the statements issued by the eight members and explicitly disassociated itself from them. It also distanced itself from and condemned a statement issued by the Lahore High Court Bar Association.
The Pakistan Bar Council said the statements in question did not represent the collective position, policy or views of the legal community or the council. It stressed that bar representatives should not use bar platforms for personal or political purposes.
Council officials further said the body firmly believed in the rule of law, independence of the judiciary, supremacy of the Constitution and respect for constitutional institutions.
They added that all members were expected to respect fundamental constitutional and democratic principles, while safeguarding the dignity and institutional autonomy of the Pakistan Bar Council remained the responsibility of every member.
