Summary Political parties urged to begin meaningful talks in national interest
LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has unanimously approved a significant resolution on the creation of new provinces, declaring that any move to redraw provincial boundaries must be carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, parliamentary procedure and national consensus.
The resolution was adopted during the 250th meeting of the Pakistan Bar Council, chaired by Vice Chairman Chishti. The session was attended by council members, including Ahsan Bhoon, Tahir Nasrullah Warraich, Aamir Saeed Ran, and other members.
According to the unanimously adopted resolution, the establishment of new provinces should be pursued solely through the constitutional framework of Pakistan and the parliamentary process. The council stressed that the issue must be approached on the basis of national interest rather than political considerations.
The Pakistan Bar Council urged all political parties to initiate meaningful dialogue on the matter, saying that discussions should focus on achieving a durable and broadly acceptable solution that meets constitutional requirements.
The resolution emphasised that consensus-building is essential before any decision is taken on such an important constitutional issue.
The meeting also decided to organise a national seminar on the subject of new provinces. Representatives of political parties with seats in Parliament, all provincial bar councils, legal experts and other relevant stakeholders will be invited to participate.
According to the resolution, the seminar will aim to strengthen the federation, promote better governance and help develop national consensus on the issue of creating new provinces.
The Pakistan Bar Council said the forum would provide an opportunity for constitutional and legal experts, lawmakers and representatives of the legal fraternity to exchange views and identify practical ways forward on the matter.
Reaffirming its position, the council stated that the issue of creating new provinces should only be advanced through constitutional and democratic procedures. It also underlined the need to encourage a broader national dialogue, describing it as an essential step towards addressing one of the country's key constitutional questions.
