NEW YORK (Web Desk) – The United Nations has reiterated that its position on Jammu and Kashmir remains unchanged, saying the dispute should be resolved peacefully in accordance with the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions, the Simla Agreement and with full respect for human rights.
During a regular press briefing in New York, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, responded to a question about the human rights situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and India's Aug. 5, 2019 decision.
"Our position on Kashmir has not changed," Haq said.
He added that the UN's position on Jammu and Kashmir is guided by the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions. He also noted that the UN Secretary-General continues to refer to the 1972 Simla Agreement as an important bilateral agreement between Pakistan and India.
According to the state-run news agency, Pakistan marked the anniversary of India's Aug. 5, 2019 decision, when the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked the special constitutional status of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution.
The report said the move was followed by a communications blackout, restrictions on public movement and the deployment of thousands of additional Indian troops in the region.
It further said India later issued domicile certificates to a large number of non-local residents, granting them permanent residency and eligibility for government jobs. According to the report, critics say the move was aimed at altering the region's demographic composition.
