Indonesia shows interest in broadening defence ties with Pakistan

Lt-Gen (r) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin of Indonesia met Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at GHQ to discuss enhanced defence cooperation and strategic ties.
RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – Lieutenant General (r) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia, called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Monday.
The high-level meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, evolving regional and global security dynamics, and exploration of avenues to enhance bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides underscored the importance of strengthening institutional linkages, training collaboration, and defence industrial cooperation. Discussions included ways to advance joint training exercises, capacity-building initiatives, and knowledge exchange across defence sectors.
The visiting Indonesian dignitary lauded the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their sacrifices in the ongoing fight against terrorism. He expressed Indonesia’s desire to further expand defence ties with Pakistan across multiple domains.
Field Marshal Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fostering a strong and enduring defence relationship with Indonesia. He emphasised that the partnership would be based on shared values, mutual respect, and a convergence of strategic interests.
The meeting highlighted opportunities to deepen engagement in defence manufacturing, research and development, and multilateral security collaboration. Both nations agreed to continue dialogue aimed at strengthening institutional and operational cooperation.
