ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) -The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms and snowfall in several parts of the country from December 20 to 22 as a strong westerly weather system moves in.

According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre, the system is expected to enter Balochistan on December 19 and gradually spread to the upper and central regions by December 20, bringing unsettled weather conditions to much of Pakistan.

Balochistan is likely to experience rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms from the evening of December 19 through December 20. Snowfall is expected in hilly and mountainous areas including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Zhob, Harnai, Noshki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Panjgur, Awaran, Kech, Turbat, Gwadar and Jiwani.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, intermittent rain, gusty winds and thundershowers are forecast from the night of December 20 to December 22. Moderate snowfall is expected in upper districts such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Mansehra and Haripur, while rain is likely in the plains including Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are expected to receive rain and snowfall with strong winds from the night of December 20 until the morning of December 23. Heavy snowfall may occur at isolated locations in Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Gilgit, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Poonch.

Meanwhile, rain with thunderstorms is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the Pothohar region from December 20 evening to December 21. Murree and Galiyat may receive rain and snowfall, increasing the risk of landslides. Light rain or drizzle is also likely in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan and nearby areas.

The PMD has warned that snowfall could cause road closures and traffic disruptions in hilly regions, while landslides and avalanches are feared in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. Tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety guidelines.
