U-turn: PM terms COAS, DG ISI rejoinders lawful

Talking to the media at Islamabad airport before leaving for Davos to attend World Economic Forum, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani saidhe wanted to dispel the impression that the top military brass’ action was unconstitutional and unlawful. Now the situation has become clear and ambiguities have been removed, the PM said.PM Gilani said that the country cannot bear confrontations among the institutions and every institution has to work together to safeguard its interests.The two sides have long been in conflict, but tempers flared in recent months over a secret memo allegedly sent by the government to Washington last year asking for help in stopping a supposed army coup. The government has denied any connection to the memo.The army was outraged by the memo and pushed the Supreme Court to investigate against the governments wishes.The probe prompted a war of words between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the army.But Gilani said on Wednesday that he wanted to dispel any impression that the military acted unconstitutionally or violated rules.
