New Punjab traffic laws bring jail terms, licence cancellation, and hefty fines for violators

Punjab Assembly tabled the Provincial Motor Vehicles Fourth Amendment Ordinance 2025, proposing stricter traffic penalties, heavy fines, and possible jail terms for serious violations.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025 has been tabled in the Punjab Assembly, following approval from the Governor of Punjab.

After formal presentation in the House, the ordinance has been referred to the relevant standing committee for further deliberation.

Under the proposed law, strict punishments and heavy fines have been introduced for multiple traffic violations. These include keeping tinted windows, allowing underage children to drive, violating one-way rules, and driving vehicles without a fitness certificate. For such offences, penalties of up to six months’ imprisonment and fines of up to Rs50,000 have been proposed.

The ordinance makes it mandatory for both driver and passengers to wear seat belts. Speeding penalties have been revised, with fines of Rs2,000 for motorcyclists, Rs3,000 for three-wheelers, Rs5,000 for ordinary vehicles, and up to Rs20,000 for luxury and transport vehicles.

Special fines have also been fixed for overloading, signal violations, driving at night with defective lights, one-way violations, zebra crossing violations, driving without a license, emitting smoke, and riding without a helmet. These fines vary according to the type of vehicle.

Motorcyclists will face fines ranging from Rs2,000 to Rs3,000, ordinary vehicles Rs3,000 to Rs5,000, luxury vehicles Rs8,000 to Rs10,000, and transport vehicles Rs10,000 to Rs15,000 for such violations.

The ordinance has now been sent to the relevant committee of the Punjab Assembly and will become law after formal approval by the Assembly.
