LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of the Punjab Assembly, Imtiaz Sheikh, on Saturday challenged the suspension of his membership by Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

Imtiaz Mehmood Sheikh approached the court through Advocate Azhar Siddique and made the Punjab government, Governor Punjab, and the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, among others, respondents in the petition.

In his plea, Sheikh argued that during a session of the Assembly, he had pointed out the lack of quorum during the passage of four bills. In response, the speaker misused Assembly Rules 4 and 5 to suspend his membership for 15 sessions.

The petition requests the court to declare the speaker's decision null and void and to order the restoration of his membership.

It is worth mentioning that the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly had suspended 26 opposition members for 15 sessions over violations of his rulings.

Commenting on the matter, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan had said that the action was taken due to disorderly conduct in the house, including chanting slogans, pushing, and tearing official documents. He emphasized that the dignity and order of the House must be maintained at all costs. He acknowledged the right to protest but stated it must remain within constitutional, legal, and procedural boundaries.
