Former AJK premier Tanveer Ilyas remanded in FIA custody for misusing diplomatic passport

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The sessions court in Islamabad has granted a three-day physical remand of former Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas for possessing his diplomatic passport after stepping down from the position of premier.
The former AJK prime minister was produced before the court of civil judge Abbas Shah by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). He was represented by advocates Sabir Malik and Naveed Raza Mughal.
During the proceedings, the FIA prosecutor argued that Sardar Tanveer Ilyas had violated the law by using his diplomatic passport to visit Saudi Arabia after stepping down from the position of prime minister.
It was disclosed to the court that his diplomatic passport had been cancelled, yet he had failed to return it.
The prosecutor stressed the necessity of recovering the passport from Ilyas, requesting an eight-day remand for further investigation.
In defence, one of Tanveer Ilyas's lawyers contended that his client, being a former prime minister, was entitled to utilise his diplomatic passport.
The lawyer informed the court that Ilyas had solely used the passport for his trip to Saudi Arabia, and expressed his client's intention to present the diplomatic passport in court.
At this point, the FIA prosecutor claimed that Tanveer Ilyas had effectively confessed to the alleged crime by presenting his passport.
Despite the prosecutor's request for an eight-day physical remand, the court decided to grant only a three-day physical remand for further investigation.
