'Bleak future' awaits ANP in Karachi
Pakistan
Some in the party ranks hold ANP's provincial leadership for its decline.
KARACHI (Web Desk) - The Awami National Party (ANP), which once enjoyed significant support among Pakhtun populace of the port city, has seemingly become irrelevant in the political landscape ahead of the second phase of the Sindh local government elections.
The ANP has now fielded candidates in just four union committees (UCs) out of the 246 UCs in the seven districts of Karachi. The party will announce its support for other parties such as the Jamaat-e-Islami, MQM-P, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) in the LG polls.
Some in the party ranks hold ANP’s provincial leadership responsible for its decline. They accuse them of clinging to power and refusing to hold intra-party polls and sidelining a number of workers for demanding reforms in the organisational structure of the party. However, ANP’s Sindh chapter denied the allegations, saying the party has strong organisational structures in place.
