Lodging multiple FIRs for single offence against law: IHC

How various FIRs could be registered against govt officials over a single offence, IHC wondered
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday observed that registration of multiple first information reports (FIRs) for a single occurrence is against the law.
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri made these remarks while hearing petitions against lodging FIRs by the Punjab police against PTV officials under different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act for airing PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif’s press conference. During the hearing, the high court wondered how various FIRs could be registered against government officials over a single offence.
The judge also pointed out that the act of the Punjab government was in contradiction to its stance on FIRs against PTI Senator Azam Swati in other provinces. The judge sought assistance of the presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Islamabad High Court Bar Association and barred the authorities concerned from lodging any new FIR against the PTV officials without court’s permission.
