Imran Khan jeopardising Pakistan's attempts to fix its economy
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) International magazine The Economist says that Imran Khan is endangering the process of improving the economy, the former Prime Minister is diverting the attention of the government from important issues with his threats.
The Economist in its report stated that Pakistan s economy has been in turmoil for decades, borrowing to make plans that are less profitable, while the pandemic and the fallout from the war in Ukraine have battered an economy already reeling from decades of mismanagement, and a focus on debt-driven infrastructure projects that generated no returns.
According to the international magazine, the Shehbaz government is seen as decisive in terms of economic decisions, but the dissolution of parliament could jeopardize the economic reform process.
The Economist fears that if early elections are held, the IMF will not take seriously a government that has been a guest for a few weeks.
“The country is running deficits on both its budget and its current account. It needs some $37bn worth of financing for the fiscal year beginning in June, reckons the finance minister,” the report added.
