Interior ministry decides to launch amnesty scheme for holders of more than one passport

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Ministry of Interior has decided to launch amnesty scheme for the holders of more than one Pakistani passport.

Under the plan, the people who hold more than one Pakistani passport will be given 90 days to cancel their extra travel documents.

A meeting on amnesty scheme was held under the chairmanship of Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid. The meeting was attended by Secretary Interior Yousaf Naseem Khokhar and DG Passport Dr Naeem Rauf.

Various proposals for amnesty scheme were considered and important decisions were taken during the meeting. It was briefed that the ministry has received 1629 applications regarding dual passport and are pending due to lack of policy.

Final approval will be sought from the federal cabinet while interior minister directed the DG passport and immigration to prepare a summary in this regard.

The ministry said applicants would only be allowed to hold one passport. He was informed in the meeting that 90 days would be given for cancellation of more than one passport and cases of amnesty beneficiaries will be referred to the FIA.

According to the ministry, the current law carries a minimum sentence of three years for those who hold more than one passport. The amnesty scheme will benefit overseas Pakistanis holding passports with more than one name.
