Malala's comments on marriage spark online controversy

Dunya News

Malala was recently featured on the cover of Vogue UK magazine

(Web Desk) - Malala Yousafzai, the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was recently featured on the cover of Vogue’s July 2021 issue in which she spoke in depth about her life and future plans.

Malala’s interview highlighted her struggle, strengths and fears, ambitions and upcoming ventures. However, one particular comment from Malala about marriage has sparked an online debate with some condoning and others condemning her views.

The interview quotes Malala as saying, “Thinking about relationships, you know, on social media, everyone’s sharing their relationship stories, and you get worried…If you can trust someone or not, [and] how can you be sure.”

She goes on to say, “I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”

While many called her a “western puppet” for her views on marriage and called her out for seemingly negating Islamic teachings, others, including celebrities from all over the world, praised Malala for the interview.

Malala has so far not reacted to the online furor, however, her father Ziauddin Yousafzai did issue a clarification about his daughter’s remarks.

“There is no truth in it. The media and social media have taken an excerpt of her interview out of context and shared it with their own interpretations. And that’s it,” he wrote in a tweet on Thursday.
