Rangers, police enforce lockdown in Karachi after 8pm
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Police and Rangers pumped the brakes on unnecessary movement of Karachi’s citizens after 8pm following strict orders by the Sindh government. Police have warned citizens that stern action will be taken against violators of the lockdown.
Police closed down busy markets and shops across the city except for bakeries, medical stores and milk shops. Checking is also underway by deploying barriers along major highways causing unusually dense traffic flow.
The police also erected a large number of checkpoints in the city and patrolled its streets and alleys, with cautionary announcements being made through the patrol vehicles. According to the Sindh Home Department’s directive, only two people are allowed to travel in a car together after 8 pm.
Police officials say that in the first phase, people are being made aware of the new orders and legal action would be taken against those who leave their homes without any valid reason.
Citizens say the government’s move is the need of the hour and everyone should abide by the directives.
The government of Sindh, keeping in view rising cases of the coronavirus in the province, had decided to ban unnecessary movement of people after 8pm from May 25 in the provincial capital.
While chairing meeting of Anti-coronavirus Task Force Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah had directed IG Sindh to stop unnecessary movement of people in vehicles.
Murad Ali Shah had said that if the citizens cooperate with the authorities, the cases would decline after two weeks after which people could move towards normal working hours.
