Daniel Pearl case: Sindh govt to file review petition against acquittal

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Sindh government has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of the men accused of murdering American journalist Daniel Pearl.

Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan told Dunya News that he was in touch with the Sindh government regarding the case and that it would be filing a review in the Supreme Court against the decision.

The Attorney General said that the Supreme Court issued a short order in the Daniel Pearl murder case; Justice Yahya Khan Afridi disagreed with the decision to acquit the accused.

He said the men were acquitted on the basis of lack of evidence. The Supreme Court also ordered the immediate release of the four accused.

It is pertinent to mention that the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam dismissed Sindh government’s petition against the decision of SHC to overturn the conviction of accused.

The Sindh High Court had commuted the death sentence of prime suspect Ahmed Omer Sheikh to seven years in prison.

Justice KK Agha and Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi issued verdict on appeals, lodged by the suspects against their sentences, after 18 years and acquitted the other three accused in the case who had earlier been handed life terms.

Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil were the co-accused while Ahmed Omer Sheikh, a British national, is the main accused.

The SHC remarked that the kidnapping case is proven against Ahmed Omer Sheikh while the murder accusations have not been proven against any of the suspects.
