Punjab cabinet approves to release Shehbaz, Hamza on parole
LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab cabinet on Tuesday gave approval to release former Punjab chief minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif and his son and party leader Hamza Shehbaz on parole.
Earlier today, a draft had been prepared to release Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz on parole for five days.
Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar had directed to get the draft approved from the provincial cabinet. The Punjab Home Department said that both the PML-N leaders will be released following approval from the cabinet.
On Sunday, Punjab Minister for Prisons Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan said that Punjab government had decided to release former Punjab chief minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz, who are serving jail terms, on parole due to the death of his mother Begum Shamim Akhtar.
He said that releasing Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz on parole was their legal and moral right, adding that the provincial government will take decision after receiving application from the Sharif family.
Chohan said that the former provincial chief minister’s legal team and their relatives have been given permission to consult them in jail.
“The Buzdar government will not do any politics regarding the last rites of late Begum Shamim Akhtar,” he said adding that the government is with the Sharif family in this hour of grief.
On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Attaullah Tarrar said that application for the release of party president and his son on parole will be filed after consultation.
He said that the text of the application for parole will be decided after consultation and efforts are being made to meet the requirements of the law.
Begum Shamim dies in London
Begum Shamim Akhtar, the mother of former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, died after protracted illness at the age of 90 in London after prolonged illness.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Attaullah Tarar announced the tragic news on twitter and wrote that Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shehbaz Sharif’s respected mother has passed away".
Speaking to Dunya News, Ataullah Tarar said that he spoke to Suleman Shahbaz over the phone who confirmed his grandmother’s death.
Begum Shamim was staying in London with her son Nawaz Sharif and had been ill for quite some time, said sources.
Her other son Shehbaz Sharif is under custody in Kot Lakhpat Jail while PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz, who is currently attending PDM’s public gathering in Peshawar has also been informed about death of her grandmother.
Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani have expressed grief and sorrow over sad demise of PML-N supremo’s mother.
Former President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed sorrow over her demise and prayed for the departed soul.
