Begum Shamim's death: Punjab govt decides to release Shehbaz Sharif, Hamza on parole

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab government on Sunday decided to release former Punjab chief minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz, who are serving jail terms, on parole due to the death of his mother Begum Shamim Akhtar.

In a statement released by Punjab Minister for Prisons Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan said that releasing Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz on parole was their legal and moral right, adding that the provincial government will take decision after receiving application from the Sharif family.

Chohan said that the former provincial chief minister’s legal team and their relatives have been given permission to consult them in jail.

“The Buzdar government will not do any politics regarding the last rites of late Begum Shamim Akhtar,” he said adding that the government is with the Sharif family in this hour of grief.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Attaullah Tarrar said that application for the release of party president and his son on parole will be filed after consultation.

He said that the text of the application for parole will be decided after consultation and efforts are being made to meet the requirements of the law.
