KP government approves bill against heavy school bags for children

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a legislative bill to rid school going children of carrying heavy bags to school. Violation of the proposed law will result in action against the head of the school and in case of a private school, a Rs 200,000 fine.

According to details, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved the ‘School Bags Weight Limitation Bill 2019’ which aims to ease unnecessary burden on young students. The bill will be presented in the next KP Assembly session for approval.

The proposed law will apply to all public, private, primary and secondary schools with any violation being a punishable offence.

The weight of the school bag will be determined by the age and class of the student, with it being no lower than 1.5 kilograms and no more than 7 kilograms.

Provincial Education Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the first province to propose this legislation, which would help control the weight of children’s school bags.
