Number of Covid-19 deaths to increase in the coming days, warns PM

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that deaths due to the coronavirus will increase in the country during the next few days. He said that he will himself monitor the implementation of SOPs and if any province is found lacking, it will be put on complete lockdown.

Commenting on the coronavirus situation, the Prime Minister thanked Allah that Pakistan did not follow India’s example of having an unplanned lockdown. He cited a report saying that during lockdown, 84% of Indian households lost their income and 30 million youths became unemployed.

Imran Khan said that the rich in India were unaffected by the coronavirus lockdown. He said that this is what I have been saying from the beginning, that we must look out for the poor as they are the most vulnerable in such a situation. He said that his government distributed 120 billion rupees in Ehssas Cash program to aid the poor, which is why the situation is not as bad as in India.

He said that the virus is on the rise in Pakistan, and he fears that in the next few days, there is a risk of more deaths in the country. After looking at the situation around the world, Smart Lockdown was made a priority, he added.

The Prime Minister appealed to the public to follow SOPs and warned that if we are not careful, the pressure on hospitals will be too much to bear.

He further said that he would review the implementation of SOPs around the entire country and monitor the situation from the PM House. He said that he will get reports on a daily basis and in the areas where SOPs are not implemented, strict action will be taken.

Imran Khan said that in 70 years Pakistan has not spent proportionally on its health system. Past rulers used to go abroad for treatment of just a minor cough but they did not care about the country’s health system.
