ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday adjourned the hearing on the plea seeking release of ex-prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on bail in Al-Azizia reference on medical grounds.

During the proceedings on the petition filed by PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, Medical Superintendent of Services Hospital told the two-member bench of the court that Nawaz Sharif is suffering from various diseases including hypertension and blood pressure.

Justice Amir Farooq asked the doctor to tell about the health of ex-premier in simple words over which, the MS said his condition is still critical, adding that Nawaz’s personal doctor Dr Adnan is aware about everything and he has also shown his trust on the medical board.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar asked about the nature of Nawaz’s disease that whether it is fatal or not responding to which, the doctors told it can be deadly if proper treatment is ignored.

Meanwhile, the MS said that Nawaz Sharif requires 50,000 platelets to travel from the hospital. The former premier cannot be taken to anywhere until stability of his condition, he continued.

Justice Moshin Akhtar remarked it is also necessary to know whether the patient is satisfied over the treatment he is being given.

Subsequently, the court has sought medical reports of Nawaz Sharif and adjourned the hearing till October 29

Earlier, while removing administrative objections raised by its registrar office on a condition that PML-N supremo’s signature were required before proceedings, Justice Farooq asked from the petitioner’s advocate: “What would happen if Nawaz Sharif says that he had not filed any petition? [...] we are removing objections but make sure to have Sharif’s signature.” “We will decide about the matter from judicial side.”

The court had also issued notices to the concerned parties, including chief secretary, secretary of interior and medical reports from Services Hospital’s team and medical superintendent of Kot Lakhpat Jail, in the petition.

On Monday night, Sharif was rushed to the hospital after his platelets dropped to a dangerously low level with his doctors raising alarming concerns.

Dr Adnan Khan, a personal physician of Sharif, had informed about his deteriorating health, urging the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government to immediately shift him to the hospital for treatment.

“Former PM #NawazSharif is detected to have critically low Platelet Count (16*10^9/L) that could be due to multiple pathologies & requires immediate in-hospital care. I have requested the authorities concerned to act in urgency,” Dr Adnan Khan tweeted after seeing the PML-N supremo at NAB’s Thokar Niaz Baig office.

Later, incarcerated former PM was diagnosed with acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a disorder that leads to an abrupt and sharp drop in blood platelets, according to a medical board.

A doctor said the treatment has been started after the diagnosis was confirmed, adding that the ailment was treatable in Pakistan. "He does not have aplastic anaemia and his haemoglobin and WBC count are normal. Platelets are low though," the doctor said and added Sharif’s bone marrow was also functioning normally and is making blood as it should in addition to a normal level of reticulocytes.
