Kerry-Lugar bill: Pakistan to get US$ 179 million

Pakistan gets US$ 179 million out of the US$ 1.5 billion in the first year of the Kerry-Lugar bill.

Talking to the media, Senator Richard Lugar said that out of the US$ 1.5 billion allotted for the first year of the Kerry-Lugar bill, only US$ 179 million have been allocated to four development programs. However the projects would be subject to scrutiny for the effective and efficient use of the fund. Senator Richard Lugar said that Pakistan wanted to use the funds to create dams but the United States wants to utilise the Kerry-Lugar funds for the development in the education and health sectors.Senator Lugar said that the preference of the United States is to establish peace in Afghanistan. He said that it would not be against the interest of the United States if the Taliban control the southern part of the country and Hamid Karzai the northern part. The Kerry-Lugar bill would facilitate Pakistan with US$ 7.5 billion over a course of five years with US$ 1.5 billion allotted for each year.
