Govt, opposition in deadlock over nomination of ECP members
Opposition suggested to forward the list to SC instead of PM Imran Khan/
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Opposition and government on Monday rejected each other’s proposed nominees for appointment in the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The committee has decided to inform Prime Minister Imran Khan about the proposed names whereas opposition member suggested that the matter should be sent to the Supreme Court of Pakistan instead of PM Khan.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member Shireen Mazari expressed that they devised a way of harmony by letting the opposition select a member from Balochistan as they will select someone from the Sindh. “Opposition wants to bring its member from the Sindh”, she added. It arose constitutional crises pertaining to the appointment in ECP.
According to Dunya News sources, new members have not yet been appointed, even after six months of retirement of former ECP members.
On June 11, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif suggested names for vacant Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) posts from Sindh and Balochistan, Dunya News reported.
Shehbaz Sharif has proposed the names of Abdul Rasool Memon, Khalid Javed and Noorul Haq Qureshi for the appointment of ECP member from Sindh.
The opposition leader suggested the names of Shah Mohammad Jatoi, Salahuddin Mengal and Mohammad Rauf Ata for the vacant post of the ECP member from Balochistan.
Shehbaz Shariz has forwarded the list of reviewed names to Prime Minister Imran Khan, and wrote in his letter that the constitutional responsibility will not be fulfilled if consensus is not reached.
“You leveled false and baseless allegations over the previous nominees, and declared the person ineligible which was nominated by your own foreign minister. Such remarks can easily be given as well against the names which you proposed.”
