NA session disrupted over rift between govt and opposition
The deputy speaker adjourned the session till Wednesday at 11am.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Assembly’s session was again disorganized on Tuesday following a strong protest by opposition members over voting on a bill moved by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) MNA Aliya Kamran.
Reportedly, the MNA had sought an increase in the number of judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The PTI members initially rejected that bill, however Aliya Kamran insisted for a voting on the bill.
The headcount revealed that 96 MNAs opposed the bill, while 94 were in favour of it. Therefore, the NA decided against the move.
Meanwhile, opposition members staged a protest in front of Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri’s desk when he refused their demand of vote recounting.
The deputy speaker delayed the session for 10 minutes.
After negotiations between the PTI and the opposition members, the session was resumed and Suri forwarded the draft to a committee.
About an hour later, the deputy speaker returned to the House and adjourned the session till Wednesday at 11am.
According to initial assessment, the bill could not be passed as it was not supported by four members of the PMLN including Maryam Aurangzeb, Nisar Cheema.
Later, PPP senior leader Khurshid Shah expressed annoyance over the PMLN members for not supporting the bill.
